Epidemiology, resistance characteristics, virulence determinants, and treatment outcomes of Staphylococcus aureus bone and joint infections: a one-year prospective study at a tertiary care hospital in India

Abstract: Purpose:The study was aimed to explore the differences between the Staphylococcus aureus osteosynthesis-associated infection (OAI) and non-implant related infections (NIRI) in terms of epidemiology, resistance characteristics, virulence determinants, treatment, risk factors, and outcome. Methods: A prospective study was conducted from 2018 through 2019. The phenotypic and genotypic characterization of S. aureus, risk factors, treatment, and outcome were compared. Results: A total of 60 patients were included. … Show more

“…Five studies reported outcomes of severity of infection [ 25 , 27 ] or determinants of chronic infection [ 24 , 31 , 36 ], whereas nine other studies used different definitions of outcome for failure, recurrence, or success [ 26 , 28 , 29 , 30 , 32 , 33 , 34 , 35 , 37 ] ( Table 2 ).…”

“…In studies of OM, surgical therapy differed among studies depending on the type of BJI included. In three studies with device-related OM [ 26 , 34 , 36 ], data on rifampicin used was reported in only one [ 34 ]. In three OM studies, analysis of acute/chronic OM were reported with different definitions of acute infection (i.e., <1 month, <2 months and <24 months) and chronic infection (i.e., ≥1 month, >12 months, and ≥24 months) [ 24 , 31 , 36 ].…”

“…Recurrent infection was defined as the presence of clinical data of infection with the same microorganism one month after the patient completed the treatment for the first episode, and recovery was defined as the clinical resolution of the infection after completion of antibiotic treatment without recurrence ( Banerjee et al., 2020 ).…”
