Epidemiology of vaccine-preventable diseases in Japan: considerations for pre-travel advice for the 2019 Rugby World Cup and 2020 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games

Abstract: IntroductionIn 2019 and 2020, Japan will host two international sporting events estimated to draw a combined 22 million visitors. Mass gatherings like these ones increase the risk of spread of infectious disease outbreaks and international transmission. Pre-travel advice reduces that risk.MethodsTo assist ministries of health and related organizations in developing pre-travel advice, we summarized national surveillance data in Japan (2000–2016, to the extent available) for rubella, invasive pneumococcal diseas… Show more

“…109 Although no global outbreaks of meningococcal disease have occurred after the Hajj for decades, a high level of awareness of the possibility of outbreaks at all mass gatherings remains. 87,[110][111][112] Increasingly, attention is being focused on vaccinepreventable diseases, such as cholera, polio, measles, and pertussis, which are increasing in the eastern Mediterranean owing to conflict and large refugee populations with poor access to preventive public health services. 113 The highly lethal MERSCoV causes increasing concern, as it continues to circulate in Saudi Arabia 78,79 and remains in the top ten of the WHO Research and Development Blueprint list of infectious diseases likely to cause major epidemics (appendix).…”

“…While multiple health threats, especially infectious diseases, have been discussed in the preparatory phase of Tokyo 2020 [ 6 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 ], addressing the increasing number of patients suffering from heat illness in the summer season has been a critical agenda [ 7 , 8 , 9 ], because Tokyo 2020 was scheduled during the hottest and most humid period of the year in Japan, and the maximum air temperatures regularly exceeded 35 °C [ 23 ]. Although the government has started to introduce a new heatstroke alert system to raise citizens’ awareness in the summer 2020 [ 24 ], the extent to which heat illness would impact healthcare provision during MGEs, including the Olympic and Paralympic Games, was not sufficiently discussed.…”
