Epidemiology of respiratory virus before and during COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract: The COVID pandemic has forcefully turned the spotlight on the importance of the diagnosis of respiratory virus infections. Viruses have always been a frequent and common cause of respiratory tract infections. Rapid molecular diagnostics applied to the diagnostics of respiratory virus infections has revolutionized microbiology laboratories only a few years ago. Few studies illustrate the epidemiology of respiratory viruses, and fewer still those that have compared the pre-pandemic to the pandemic period. During… Show more

“…Few studies were conducted to investigate the change in the virus epidemiology between the periods before and during the COVID-19 pandemic [36][37][38]. The majority of these studies were conducted in Europe, China, and America, with very few studies conducted in the Middle East region [36][37][38]. Our study adds to the literature by being conducted in a region with a scarcity of data.…”

“…This is one of the first studies to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the change in the viruses detected in respiratory infection patients by comparing the detection rates between the periods before and after the pandemic. “…This outbreak has posed a serious threat to both the global economy and health security, prompting increased attention to respiratory infectious diseases. In several studies, [10][11][12] polymerase chain reaction has been used to investigate the epidemiological characteristics of respiratory pathogens in various countries. Li et al 1 conducted a large-scale investigation of the pathogenic and epidemiological characteristics of ARIs in China prior to the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic (2009)(2010)(2011)(2012)(2013)(2014)(2015)(2016)(2017)(2018)(2019).…”

“…In recent years, coronavirus infection ( CoV ) has emerged as a replacement for influenza, which is a classic respiratory viral infection, having been identified as a large problem and a risk to human health worldwide ( Avolio et al, 2022 ). The risk of respiratory viral infection is because of its rapid and various routes of transmission, such as via droplets and air in a closed environment ( von Linstow et al, 2008 ; Tagliamonte et al, 2021 ).…”
