“…Pneumonia is a common childhood infectious disease and a leading cause of paediatric hospitalisation, resulting in more than 100 000 hospitalisations and greater than US$500 million of healthcare costs annually in the USA 1. Global estimates suggest that children experience 120 million episodes of pneumonia each year, resulting in 1.3 million paediatric deaths 2.…”

“…Pathways can improve the quality of care for children with asthma. 31 However, there is little evidence-based guidance on how to implement pathways and improve pediatric care in community hospitals, [17][18][19][20] where the majority of children are cared for nationally. This is the first study to our knowledge that details the key determinants of pediatric asthma pathway implementation in community hospital settings.…”

“…[15][16][17][18][19] The majority of children with asthma in the United States are cared for in community hospitals, which provide services for both adults and children. 20 However, prior studies of pediatric asthma pathways have largely excluded community hospitals. These studies primarily focused on determining clinical effectiveness, rather than detailing the implementation process.…”

“…1 Rates of emergency department use for asthma are on the rise 2 with three million children suffering a severe exacerbation annually 1 resulting in 113,840 pediatric hospitalizations, costing approximately $433 million. 3 Thus, it is crucial to maximize the quality of care provided for this condition. According to the National Asthma Education and Prevention Program Expert Panel Report-3 (EPR-3) and the Global Initiative for Asthma 2017 report, spirometry tests should be performed at the initial visit for asthma, after treatment is started, during periods of progressive loss of asthma control, and at least 1–2 times annually depending on response to therapy.…”
