Epidemiology of Paget’s disease of bone in the city of Recife, Brazil

Abstract: Epidemiological studies of Paget's disease of bone (PDB) have shown a remarkable geographical variation in the prevalence rates of the disease. In South America, the frequency is considered to be low, despite scant epidemiological data on this continent regarding the disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and incidence of PDB in one institution in the city of Recife, Northeast Brazil. All patients aged 45 years and over attending the Pernambuco Osteoporosis Centre at the Endocrine and Di… Show more

“…In non-European countries, the PDB prevalence is lower than in European countries and varies widely. The total prevalence was 6.8 per 1,000 patients, and the incidence density for PDB at 50.3 per 10,000 person-years in Recife in South America [13]. In the USA, approximately 1-2% of the population are affected by PDB, with the northeastern region showing the highest prevalence [14].…”

“…Epidemiological data in South America are scarce. In Brazil, the most important prevalence study was conducted in a city located in the northeast region, which had European colonization, and the rates were comparable to those in southern Europe (6,7). The etiology is not fully known; however, it seems that genetic and environmental factors play a role (4,5).…”

“…In Brazil, data on its incidence are scarce. An analysis of nearly 8,000 patients followed up in a specialized institution in the city of Recife between 2006 and 2009 identified 53 individuals with PDB, resulting in a total prevalence of 6.8 cases per 1,000 patients (13), which is equivalent to data from Southern Europe (14). Recently, a series of 134 cases recorded over a 15-year period was reported in the city of Florianopolis (15).…”
