Background: WHO declared COVID-19 a global pandemic on 11th March 2020. Due to the lack of adequate treatment and approved vaccines, proper infection control practices are the only effective tools for prevention and control of COVID-19 infection among the health care facilities. Objectives: This study aimed to assess the infection control knowledge, practices, and perceived barriers towards COVID-19 among physicians working at Ain Shams University hospitals. Methods: Cross-sectional was carried out among a sample of physicians working at Ain Shams university hospitals, Cairo, Egypt, by using an online questionnaire. The design of the questionnaire was based mainly on the WHO guidance for infection prevention and control during health care when novel coronavirus infection is suspected and CDC guidance for COVID-19. Results: A total of 318 physicians with different job titles and specialties participated in this study, results showed average infection control knowledge (the mean correct answer rate was 57.1%+ 15.9%) and practices (infection control practices score was 78.76% + 12.17%) among our studied group. Patients overload and improper design of the working places were perceived as barriers to infection control practices by the majority (90%) of our participants. Conclusion: Our study results showed average infection control knowledge and practices towards COVID-19. There are defects in certain aspects related to infection control knowledge and practices that needed more practical training and properly designed working places to improve it.

Background: Healthcare workers (HCWs) are at an increased risk of Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) transmission. Despite the development of several vaccines, inequitable distribution and vaccine hesitancy impact their role in protecting HCWs. Adherence to Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) practice remains a cornerstone in preventing disease spread in health facilities and in communities. Objectives: The study aims to measure knowledge and practices of physicians in relation to COVID-19 infection prevention and control. It also aimed to identify perceived barriers facing IPC practice. Method: In this cross-sectional study, we used an online survey to collect data from physicians working in a university hospital in Cairo throughout June-July, 2020. The survey included 12 items for knowledge, 8 items for practice and 6 items for perceived barriers. Scores for knowledge and practice of IPC were calculated and transformed into percent scores. Results: Three hundred and eighteen (318) physicians responded to the survey. The mean knowledge percent score was 57.1±15.9. Participants knew the least about facemasks and gloves protectiveness. The mean percent score for IPC practice was 78.8±12.2. Less than a quarter of physicians "always" used N95 mask during all patient care procedures or did a seal test when donning one. Overcrowded emergency departments, improper work place design, shortage in IPC supplies and insufficient training were the main barriers to IPC practice cited by almost 90% of the study participants. Conclusion: Physicians in our study had average IPC Knowledge score compared to other studies. Continuous IPC training can largely improve IPC knowledge and practice among physicians.

In December 2019, first case of COVID-19 was documented in the Wuhan, China. The symptoms commonly associated with COVID-19 include cough, fever, fatigue, and breathing difficulties. In 30th January 2020, the WHO declared COVID-19 a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. The coronavirus entered Nigeria through an infected Italian citizen who came in contact with a Nigerian citizen who was subsequently infected with the coronavirus. The coronavirus then spread to other citizens in Lagos and to other parts of the country. This study focuses on analysing the Case fatality rates (CFR) of COVID-19 in different geopolitical regions of Nigeria in the years 2020 and 2023. The regions considered are North Central, North East, North West, South South, South West and South East. This was a retrospective study using national surveillance data collected from all 36 States and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Nigeria. Epidemiological indices of COVID-19 of 12th July, 2020 and data as at 26th February, 2023 were downloaded from the official update database of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and World Health Organisation (WHO) weekly report within the same period of this study The confirmed cases and deaths were extracted directly while the Case fatality rates (CFR) were computed. The total confirmed cases, death cases, and Cases Fatality Rates (CFR) as at 12th July 2020 was 31,323, 706 and 2.3% respectively. However, in 2023, the values had changed to 440,139 confirmed cases, 3156 death cases an a CRF of 0.7% respectively. The North Central region was observed to have the highest fatality rate of 62.1% and 47.2% in 2020 and 2023 respectively. The North East accounted for 32.5% and 12.6%, Noth West 36.4% and 16.4%, South- South, 37.5% and 12.4%, South East 16.9% and 4.7% and South West 15.4% and 10.1% respectively in 2020 and 2023. The 6 geopolitical regions of the country experience decrease at different proportion in Case Fatality Rates and this can be attributed to various factors, including increased vaccination coverage, better understanding of the virus, improved healthcare infrastructure and more effective public health measures. Despite the decrease in case fatality rate, regional disparities still exist which may be linked to underlying socioeconomic and healthcare disparities between regions. Addressing these disparities is crucial for a more equitable response to future pandemics
