Epidemiology of Multiple System Atrophy: A Prevalence and Pilot Risk Factor Study in Aquitaine, France

Abstract: We investigated the prevalence of multiple system atrophy (MSA) in Gironde, France, through a network of 120 public and private specialists and assessed the relationship between some environmental factors and MSA in a case-control study involving 50 MSA patients, 50 Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients and 50 healthy controls. The occupational exposure to pesticides was evaluated through a job-exposure matrix. On prevalence day (November 1, 1998), the crude prevalence of MSA in Gironde was 1.94/100,000 inhabitant… Show more

“…Therefore, MSA-C is considered to be the most common initial manifestation of MSA in the Japanese population. In contrast, parkinsonism is predominant from the onset among Caucasian MSA patients [3,7,13,15]. One study performed in Germany showed that the frequency of MSA-C was higher than that of MSA-P [16], but there may have been some bias in this epidemiological study because it was mainly based on neuroimaging data.…”

“…Other disorders associated with parkinsonism, such as Parkinson's disease with autonomic failure, progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), and diffuse Lewy body disease (DLBD), may often be misdiagnosed as MSA-P [7,8,9,10,11,12]. A neuropathological study showed that Table 1.…”

“…On the other hand, some epidemiological reports from Europe and the United States have shown MSA-P predominance [13,14]. The current study was community-based using a national registry database; thus, it was important that the previous finding of MSA-C predominance in Japan be confirmed in a community-based epidemiological study.…”

“…Most patients deteriorate rapidly and survival beyond 10 years after disease onset is unusual. MSA is less common than PD as epidemiological studies estimate a prevalence of 1.9-4.9 people per 100,000 (Chrysostome et al, 2004;Schrag et al, 1999).…”
