Epidemiology of melanoma: the importance of correctly reporting to the cancer registries.

Abstract: In Italy, few epidemiologic studies have been conducted by tracing melanoma reports directly in the electronic registers of the operating units of pathologic anatomy. The Cancer Registers of the Italian regions receive only partial and incomplete data on the diagnoses of melanoma, for this reason, the incidences are usually underestimated. Our work offers a precise picture of the epidemiologic situation of melanoma in a homogenous sample of patients residing in a geographic area traditionally considered to hav… Show more

“…In the age group under 40 the number of women was twice the number of men. These results are in line with the latest published sex-specific trends published for populations all over Europe and USA indicating higher incidence among younger women, while men are affected mostly in their middle age [7][8][9][10][11]. These results coincide with the results published in the National Cancer Registry in the Republic of Serbia.…”

“…General epidemiological features of melanoma relating to the number of newly diagnosed cases and related mortality are mainly well established in many developed countries, but we miss the data on histopathological features of melanoma [7]. The National Cancer Registry in Serbia keeps only the data on newly diagnosed cases and number of related deaths, while important prognostic data such as tumor thickness according to Breslow and presence of ulcerations are missing [6].…”

“…Additionally, missing data across some of the study variables limits the statistical power of our analysis, particularly for the rural group of patients. Similarly, Fidanzi et al found that incomplete data in cancer registries underestimated incidence of melanoma 15 . This highlights the importance of notifying the appropriate national‐ and state‐specific cancer registries of all diagnosed melanoma cases as well as the associated socioeconomic variables, which would prevent underpowered studies in the future and provide more comprehensive data to inform investigations of factors leading to the identified disparities.…”

Given these limitations and the evidence of disparities in this study, future investigations could further refine the definition of rural communities, assess the factors influencing access to care, including dermatologist density and socioeconomic variables, and address gaps in patient knowledge regarding skin cancer recognition and prevention.…”

“…We retrospectively collected all MCC reports in the time range 2006-2021 from the surgical pathology archives of the University Hospital of Pisa, Italy, and from the Hospital of Livorno, Italy. Of note, a higher incidence of melanoma has been reported in this area of Italy (Bagnoni et al, 2019;Fidanzi et al, 2021Fidanzi et al, , 2022. Overall, we collected 94 cases.…”
