Epidemiology of lymphogranuloma venereum in New South Wales, 2006–2015

Abstract: Aim To describe the epidemiology of lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) in New South Wales (NSW) from 2006 to 2015. Methods LGV notification data between 2006 and 2015 from New South Wales were analysed to describe time trends in counts and rates by gender, age group and area of residence, as well as anatomical sites of infection. A positivity ratio was calculated using the number of LGV notifications per 100 anorectal chlamydia notifications per year. Data linkage was used to ascertain the proportion of LGV cas… Show more

“…Contrary to the results of most studies, 12,13 the majority (63%) of our LGV cases were detected in HIV-negative patients. Accordingly, increasing proportions of HIV-negative among LGV-positives have been described 4,14 .…”

“…The study also aims to investigate the specific genotypes associated with the LGV strains in this population in China. LGV outbreaks or increasing prevalence of LGV has appeared during the last decade in many countries in North America, Europe and the Pacific in the form of proctocolitis among MSM 13–16. However, no cases with LGV-related proctocolitis or genotypes associated with LGV have been reported from clinic practice or epidemiological studies2–5 since a case was reported by us in 2007 17.…”

“…1 Increases in LGV were first seen among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (MSM) in Western Europe in 2003, and outbreaks were subsequently reported in other high-income countries, including Australia. 2 Diagnoses in the UK and across Europe rose between 2004 and 2016, with the highest European rates seen in the UK. 3 Surveillance of LGV in the UK showed a consistent ongoing pattern of the infection being concentrated in MSM living in London, many of whom were co-infected HIV and other STIs.…”
