Epidemiology of ischemic stroke from atrial fibrillation in Dijon, France, from 1985 to 2006

Abstract: The decrease in the incidence of cardioembolic/atrial fibrillation stroke in our study was probably due to a slight increase in the utilization of antithrombotic therapy in patients with atrial fibrillation, but the use of such therapies will have to increase further because of the expected aging of the population in coming years.

“…As the prevalence of AF increases, due partly to the aging population 6 , we would expect more AF-related CE strokes in the future 7 . The Global Burden of Diseases Study Group showed that, from 1990 to 2013, 75% of deaths from strokes and 81% of the stroke-related disability-adjusted life years lost occur in lowand middle-income countries 8 , where the progressive economic pressure of the growing elderly population is occurring 9 .…”

“…[1][2][3] Chronic atrial fibrillation increases stroke risk 5-to 17-fold, [4][5][6] and patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation may have a similar prognosis. 7,8 In the latter group, the 2006 American Heart Association guidelines conclude that rhythm control using direct-current cardioversion (DCCV) is an acceptable strategy to restore sinus rhythm.…”
