Epidemiology of hip fractures in Okinawa, Japan

Abstract: This study investigated the current incidence of hip fractures in Okinawa prefecture and compared the data with those obtained in our previous study, which was conducted using similar methods in 1987/1988. All patients, aged 50 years or older and residing in Okinawa, admitted to Okinawa hospitals in 2004 for a fresh hip fracture were identified from hospital registries. Details were obtained from the medical records and radiographs of all patients and classified according to fracture type (cervical or trochant… Show more

“…Compared with neck fractures, trochanteric fractures have a strong relationship with bone density [32,33] and age [10,11,34,35], which is especially evident in women [4,5,21,36-38]. One report stated that women with trochanteric fracture had significantly lower serum 25(OH)D levels than those with neck fracture [14].…”

“…Incidence of hip fracture in Okinawa [38] is reportedly higher than that in other Japanese prefectures [47,48]. The causes are believed to be the high obesity rate in youth and increased morbidity of lifestyle-related diseases in Okinawa [38].…”

“…Data regarding complications were not available in the present study, but previous studies suggest that patients who experience a neck fracture have higher body fat percentages (16), higher body mass indices (BMIs), undergone treatment for hypertension (17), and lower levels of 25(OH)D (18). Furthermore, a higher prevalence of lifestyle-related diseases, such as diabetes and hypertension in the Okinawa prefecture, is thought to be related to a high incidence of hip fractures with a relatively high N/T ratio compared with the national average in Japan (15,19). The influence of westernization on dietary habits and dwelling environment, which is associated with the increase in lifestyle-related diseases in Japan, is considered to be higher among urban residents than among rural residents.…”
