Epidemiology of hip fractures in 2002 in Rabat, Morocco

Abstract: Hip fracture has never been studied before, either in Morocco or in the adjacent countries of the south bank of the Mediterranean Sea. The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence rate of hip fracture in 2002 in Rabat Province, a large area in the northwest of The Kingdom of Morocco, by the use of register information and medical records collected from the five public hospitals of the region. The hip fracture data were restricted to cervical or trochanteric types. There was a total of 150 hip fractur… Show more

“…However, differences in the incidences have been reported related with age (1-6) and geography (7,8). Our previous investigation in the Kyoto prefecture between 2008 and 2010 suggested that the incidence of trochanteric fracture was similar in urban and rural areas whereas the incidence of neck fracture had higher rate in urban areas than in rural areas (9); these results support those previously reported in Norway (10).…”

“…In modern epidemiological studies, intracapsular fractures are generally more common than extracapsular fractures (Kannus et al, 1996;Michaëlsson et al, 1999;Zhang et al, 2000), but not always (Maghraoui et al, 2005). These two types of hip fracture are usually considered together in aetiological studies (Michaëlsson et al, 1999).…”

“…Study subjects are often derived from hospital-based case series or limited to urban populations selected exclusively from large cities, particularly the capital cities (Kuwait, Morocco, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and Iran) [11,[42][43][44][45]. Findings from these studies show that crude incidence rates among those aged 50 years and over are lowest in Morocco (52.1 and 43.7 per 100,000 in females and males, respectively) [42] and highest in Kuwait (295/100,000 in females and 200/100,000 in males) [11]. In Saudi Arabia, the incidence rates for individuals older than 40 years of age were 100/100,000 in females and 71/100,000 in males [44], and in Oman 150/100,000 and 130/100,000, respectively [43].…”
