Epidemiology of Cryptococcal antigenemia among HIV infected patients in southwestern Nigeria

Abstract: Cryptococcosis is a life-threatening fungal infection that presents diversely with no specific pathognomonic features. Cryptococcal disease is one of the most important opportunistic infections and a significant contributor to early mortality in HIV infected subjects. Cryptococcal antigenemia occurs in Nigeria, but the magnitude of this disease remains unclear. This study was carried out to determine the prevalence of CrAg among HIV infected and HIV seronegative subjects and to assess the relationship between … Show more

“…Of 432 HIV‐positive patients (mean age 38.15 ± 9.53 years) tested for cryptococcal antigenaemia, 85.7% of the patients with CD4 lymphocyte cell count less than 100 cells/µL test positive to cryptococcal antigenaemia 85 . A prevalence of 1.6% was recorded which was much lower than the prevalence 8.5% and 8.9% respectively recorded by Odegbemi et al 86 and Olademi et al 87 among HIV‐positive patients in the same south‐western part of Nigeria.…”

“…Cryptococcosis is an important public health problem that contributes significantly to morbidity and early mortality in individuals with HIV/AIDS [21]. Worldwide, C. neoformans VNI is the most common molecular type [7,8,22], while C. neoformans VNII appears in 1-16% of cases in South America, Africa and Oceania [22].…”

“…Reports from Nigeria on cryptococcosis are sketchy and were mainly based on Cryptococcal antigenemia screening 3,4 ; report on cultural isolation of Cryptococcus from throat samples is scanty 5 . Cultural isolation of Cryptococcal agents of pneumonia-like diseases has not been investigated in our region.…”
