Epidemiology and treatment patterns of epithelial ovarian cancer

Abstract: While ovarian cancer (OC) is relatively rare, it remains one of the most fatal cancers. Lack of robust screening methods for eOC lead to detection of most cases at advanced stages, and most patients relapse following initial treatment. Areas covered: This review summarizes epidemiology and treatment patterns of epithelial ovarian cancer (eOC). MEDLINE, EMBASE, conference proceedings, and the Cochrane Library were searched using key terms and Medical Subject Headings for ovarian cancer, treatment patterns, and … Show more

“…Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death from gynecologic malignancies, and the second most common cause of all‐cancer death, in women . Most ovarian cancer patients are diagnosed in late stages, with poor prognosis and short life span, due to drug resistance originating from cancer‐initiating cells. Ovarian cancer‐initiating cells are characterized by cell surface expression of CD44 and CD117 (ie c‐KIT), a phenotype first identified by us, and then others …”

“…Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of all gynecological malignancies. Late‐stage patients have a 5‐year survival rate of only 30% . However, routine treatments do not significantly improve the prognosis of patients; new treatments must be explored to enhance the treatment efficiency of ovarian cancer.…”

“…Ovarian cancer is the most lethal gynecologic oncology and the fifth leading cause of cancer-related deaths in women due to lack of early diagnosis and the prevalence of chemoresistance (Jessmon, Boulanger, Zhou, & Patwardhan, 2017;Siegel, Miller, & Jemal, 2017). Ovarian cancer can be divided into four major histological subtypes, which are serous, mucinous, endometrioid, and clear cell carcinomas (Kaku et al, 2003).…”
