Epidemiology and Treatment Guidelines of Negative Symptoms in Schizo-phrenia in Central and Eastern Europe: A Literature Review

Abstract: Aim : To gather and review data describing the epidemiology of schizophrenia and clinical guidelines for schizophrenia therapy in seven Central and Eastern European countries, with a focus on negative symptoms. Methods : A literature search was conducted which included publications from 1995 to 2012 that were indexed in key databases. Results : Reports of mean annual incidence of schizophrenia varied greatly, from 0.04 to 0.58 per 1,000 population. Lifetime prevalence varied from 0.4% to 1.4%. One study report… Show more

“…The introduction of antipsychotics was a major breakthrough in the field of psychiatry, leading to their inclusion in a number of guidelines as well as Essential Medicine Lists (EML) across countries to enhance rational prescribing (9,(14)(15)(16)(17)(18)(19). However, despite the plethora of guidelines, in clinical practice prescribing can differ appreciably from the suggestions (20)(21)(22)(23).…”

“…In contrast to delusions and hallucinations that constitute the positive symptoms of schizophrenia, negative symptoms characterize absent or diminished behavior and include motivational deficits, social withdrawal, poverty of speech, decreased emotional reactivity and psychomotor expression, and deficits in volition (10,11). Negative symptoms are common and are thought to be present in over half of patients, with reports in the literature ranging from 60 to 90% (12,13). These negative symptoms may be primary in nature (i.e., thought to be driven by underlying pathophysiology of the disorder).…”

“…1 Generally, epidemiologic research has built a powerful knowledge base over the past quarter hundred years, and this knowledge foundation will continue to make contributions to public well-being efforts at prevention of schizophrenia in the coming decades. 19 We used HWES method to model and forecast the schizophrenia incidence frequencies using the data from 91 months from 2008 to 2016. Lots of studies have used the HWES method with both additive and multiplicative approaches to analyze time series data in medical areas.…”
