Epidemiology and Severity of Sports and Recreation Injuries Presenting to a Tertiary Adult Emergency Department

Abstract: The 7.6% admission rate is higher than previously reported, likely because the study institution is a tertiary referral center. ATV riding is associated with higher severity injuries that are more likely to require hospital admission. Most sports injuries that present to an emergency department, specifically isolated soft tissue injuries of the extremities, may be more efficiently treated in a non-emergent setting.

“…Higher age was significantly associated with subsequent hospital admission; only 8% of ED presentations in our study were by people aged 45 or more, but they were significantly more likely than younger patients to be admitted to hospital. This is consistent with earlier research which found that the odds of hospital admission increased with age 15 …”

“…The sports and recreation activities with the highest odds of hospital admission following presentation to an ED were horse riding, motor sports, and cycling/BMX. Few sports injuries studies have focused on the activities most frequently associated with severe injury; an American study found that all‐terrain vehicle riding, motocross, and horse riding had high relative risks of hospital admission, while the relative risks for basketball and soccer were low, 15 consistent with our findings.…”

“…In particular, pathways emanating from the emergency departments (EDs) must be assessed, especially as concussion is a common presentation. (14,15) This is even more important when a patient presents to the ED after sustaining a head injury at a sporting event, where there were no medical professionals trained in immediate care and concussion management available on Page 3 of 17 site. Therefore, the emergency physician (EP) represents the first line of clinical management for concussions.…”
