Epidemiological Surveillance of Leprosy in Cameroon Using the ELISA Test with D-BSA and Tris-HCl as Buffer

Abstract: Background: Early detection of leprosy is important for elimination, but most cases are diagnosed only when lesions occur and nerves and skin are damaged. The determination of the risk of contacts to develop leprosy is still unpredictable, and elimination is not possible as long as contacts can still develop the disease. Methods: A modified PGL-I ELISA using tris-HCl as buffer and D-BSA as antigen evaluated IgM leprosy antibodies for the detection of subclinical leprosy infection and monitor effective chemothe… Show more

“…Between 2000 and 2014, Cameroon recorded a significant drop in leprosy prevalence, detection rates and overall burden ( Tabah et al, 2016 ). In 2000, leprosy elimination was declared in Cameroon even though a good number of health districts remain high-leprosy-burdened including Essimbiland and Mbingo in the North West Region ( Nsagha et al, 2014 ). Reasons for such high prevalence could be attributed to geo-cultural characteristics and tribal belief systems regarding leprosy as a spell which can only be treated by traditional healers ( Tabah et al, 2016 ).…”
