Background: Burn injuries are amongst one of the most devastating of all injuries, having a great impact on the patients physically, physiologically and psychologically. Burns are still one of the top causes of death and disability in the world. Aims: To study the etiology of burn, nature of burn and mortality rate in burn patients. Material and Method: A prospective institutional two year observational study of 100 patients of burn injury admitted under department of general surgery at Solapur. Result: Highest number of patients was from 18 to 30 years. The Female to male ratio is 1.77:1. Maximum number of patients has 81-100% burn (31%) with mixed burn in 51%. Accidental burn (79%) was the most common type of burn. Flame burn (74%) was most common. Overall mortality was 55%, recovery in 27% and 18% cases have residual disability. Conclusion: Accidental flame burn commonly affects young females with maximum patients having 81-100% TBSA. Mortality was more than 50%.

BackgroundBurn injuries are highly variable and dynamic. The outcome of patients is influenced by various factors and requires prompt therapeutic interventions, including fluid resuscitation, for a favorable result. Although having varying shortcomings, many scoring indexes are developed and validated in Western countries to predict mortality in a burn patient. The Abbreviated Burn Severity Index (ABSI) estimates survival expectancy in a burn patient via various negative prognostic factors. This study describes the pattern of burn injuries to validate the ABSI as an outcome predictor in burnt patients. MethodologyFrom January to December 2018, 100 patients participated in this observational research conducted in the Department of Surgery at Mahatma Gandhi Hospital's Burn Ward, a part of Dr. Sampurnanand Medical College, Jodhpur. Risk factors for death from a burn were patients' age and gender, the depth of the burn, the inhalation burn, and the total burned body surface area (TBSA). The area under the receiver operating curve (AUROC) was used to determine how well it could predict burn deaths. ResultsThis study included 100 patients (69 men and 31 women, with a ratio of 2.22:1). In total, 73 patients survived, and 27 died (a mortality rate of 27%). The fatality rate increased with increased burn surface area, reaching 100% in patients with >80% burns (p < 0.0001). Additionally, those with an ABSI of >11 expressed 100% mortality rate (p < 0.0001). ConclusionsIn this study, older age, high burned surface area, concomitant inhalational burns, full-thickness burns, and a higher ABSI were found to be significant predictors of mortality.

Background and Objectives: Management and prevention of burns are done through epidemiological study. The mortality rate of burn injuries is seven times higher in the low income countries than the high income countries. The aim of this research was to study the epidemiology of burn injury cases through analysis of the cause, magnitude and profile of burn in Erbil governorate as a method for planning preventive and management strategies.Method: A retrospective study was conducted on 593 burn cases to assess the epidemiology of burn injury cases in Erbil Governorate the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan Region from 2012 to the end of 2016. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used through the Microsoft Excel Database and the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS, Version 24). The P value of > 0.05 was considered as non-statistically significant. The P value of ≤ 0.05 was considered as statistically significant. The P value of ≤ 0.01 was considered as highly statistically significant. Results:The total number of burn cases in Erbil governorate during the period 2012 to 2016 was 593 victims. The mean (±SD) age of the studied cases was 26 ± 10.9 years ranging from one to 82 years. The highest number 189 (31.9%) of registered burn cases was in 2013, while the lowest number 74 (12.5%) of cases was in 2015. The female to male ratio of the burn victims was 2.1:1. More than half (56.7%) of them were married, while the others (43.3%) were single. Husband and polygamy were the highest leading causes of the burn cases in a way that each of the causes had formed 18.4% of the cases. The highest number (44.35%) of the burn cases was among the age group 21 to 30 years. There was a significant correlation between the marital status of the studied cases with the causes behind the burn injuries at p = 0.027 and highly significant correlation of the marital status with the survival rates in. The correlation was highly significant between the gender of the studied samples and the cause of the burns. There was no significant correlation between the educational levels of the burn victims with the causes and the survival rates as well.
