Epidemiological studies on fowl adenoviruses isolated from cases of infectious hydropericardium

Abstract: Serology, restriction enzyme analysis and polymerase chain reactions were used to classify a total of 12 fowl adenoviruses (FAV) isolated from clinical cases of infectious hydropericardium from ® eld outbreaks in seven countries in Asia and America. All isolates belonged to FAV serotype 4. Two isolates were contaminated with avian adeno-associated virus and one of them also contained FAV1. Minor differences were observed in the BamHI restriction pro® les. More variability was seen with SmaI, BglII and PstI res… Show more

“…FAdV-4 is one of the newly emergent serotypes in many regions worldwide. It was reported in Angora Goth close to Karachi in Pakistan for the first time (4). Clinically, FAdV-4 causes several syndromes in the affected chicken populations such as inclusion body hepatitis and hepatitis-hydropericardium syndrome (5,6).…”

“…The gene encoding the hexon protein has been the focus of attention. Hexon gene-based PCRs have been used to confirm the presence of FAdV4 in field outbreaks of hydropericardium, followed by restriction fragment analysis to compare the isolates (Hess et al, 1999). Meulemans et al (2001b) compared the hexon proteins of three FAdV serotypes and designed two primers corresponding to sequences in conserved parts of the two pedestal regions adjacent to the L1 loop region of the hexon protein.…”

“…Infections with adenovirus (Gassmann et al, 1981;Ramis et al, 1994;Capua et al, 1995;Weissenbö ck & Fuchs, 1995;Soike et al, 1998;Hess et al, 2000) or adenovirus-like particles (Scott et al, 1986;Pass, 1987;Mori et al, 1989;Gomezvillamandos et al, 1995;Mackie et al, 2003) have been also described in a variety of psittacine birds. Most infections were associated with necrotizing hepatitis and basophilic inclusion bodies in hepatocytes caused by different serotypes of FAdV.…”
