Epidemiological situation of Lyme borreliosis in Belgium, 2003 to 2012

Abstract: BackgroundSome studies show that the incidence of Lyme borreliosis is increasing in different European countries. In order to evaluate if this is also the case in Belgium, different data sources were consulted to describe the epidemiology of Lyme borreliosis in the country during the last decade.MethodsData from two databases were analyzed for the time period 2003–2010 and 2003–2012 for respectively: the registration of minimal clinical data from Belgian hospitals (principal and secondary diagnosis), and a sen… Show more

“…In Germany, the direct Eastern neighbour of the Netherland, the incidence of Lyme borreliosis increased between 2001 and 2006, and stabilized between 2009 and 2012 [ 7 , 24 ]. South to the Netherlands, in Belgium and France incidence rates for Lyme borreliosis remained stable between 2003 and 2012 [ 3 , 25 , 26 ].…”

“…Most cases are reported along a North–South axis, in the provinces Antwerp, Walloon Brabant, Flemish Brabant, Namur, and Luxemburg (15, 17). The incidence of LD is high in Belgian municipalities, having large forest-settlement interfaces in wealthy peri-urban areas (15).…”

“…The incidence of LD is high in Belgian municipalities, having large forest-settlement interfaces in wealthy peri-urban areas (15). Concerns have thus arisen regarding LD but few studies investigated seroprevalence (1, 17). …”

“…An incidence approach will be used for the occurrence of the different clinical manifestations of Lyme borreliosis, where the incidences of EM and disseminated Lyme will be estimated based on existing literature and surveillance systems currently in place in Belgium (e.g. sentinel network of general practitioners, network of sentinel laboratories and minimal clinical data) [ 36 , 37 ]. The cohort study will provide an estimate of the incidence of PTLDS, of the symptom durations for the different clinical manifestations as well as estimates of the group specific disability weights.…”

“…In Belgium, it is estimated that, every year, approximately 10.000 people consult a general practitioner (GP) with an erythema migrans and 200–300 people are hospitalized due to disseminated Lyme borreliosis [ 36 , 37 ]. Although, up to now, no increasing trend in the Lyme borreliosis incidence has been observed (based on the long-term surveillance systems in place), the disease is assumed to represent a significant health and cost burden for the population and the health system in Belgium.…”
