Epidemiological Significance of Crown Rot in the Fruiting Field in Relation to Colletotrichum gloeosporioides Infection of Strawberry Nursery Plants

Abstract: Anthracnose crown rot (ACR), caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, is a serious disease of strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa) in the southeastern United States, and there is a need to determine the link between nursery and fruiting-field disease risk. A 2-year study in 2007, repeated in 2008, was conducted at the North Carolina State University Horticultural Crops Research Station, Clinton, using ‘Chandler’, the most popular cultivar in North Carolina and one that is highly susceptible to ACR. Mother plants … Show more

“…Colletotrichum spp., causing anthracnose, poses a devastating threat to various crops globally, and extensive research indicates that Colletotrichum is a major pathogen in strawberry fields. Anthracnose is likely to occur throughout the growth cycle of strawberries ( Curry et al, 2002 ; Rahman and Louws, 2017 ). The increased Colletotrichum relative abundance could be a significant factor triggering strawberry disease.…”

“…Colletotrichum gloeosporioides is a necrotrophic fungi that causes Colletotrichum crown rot (CCR) of strawberry ( Fragaria × ananassa ), which is an important disease in Florida and throughout the southeastern United States. The necrotic infections in crown tissues cause necrosis, plant collapse, and death in hot and humid conditions ( MacKenzie et al, 2006 ; Rahman and Louws, 2017 ). Most commercial cultivars currently grown in the United States are susceptible to CCR and, thus, economic losses occur nearly every season from this disease.…”

“…Most commercial cultivars currently grown in the United States are susceptible to CCR and, thus, economic losses occur nearly every season from this disease. Both curative (pyraclostrobin, strobilurins, and azoxystrobin) and preventive (captan) fungicides are commonly used to control CCR, but chemical controls are not very effective once plants become infected ( MacKenzie et al, 2009 ; Rahman and Louws, 2017 ). The use of resistant varieties would be the most robust and economically viable way to control this disease.…”
