Epidemiological Review of Badminton Related Injuries Among Competitive Badminton Players

Abstract: As the fastest racket sport in the world, playing badminton involves jumps, lunges, multidirectional movements with fast-spaced changes of direction, rapid postural changes, repetitive movements of upper limb and prolonged gripping of racket with high velocity movements. These high physical demands for badminton suggest that injuries related to badminton among players may have a frequent occurrence. “…The most common injury location in our study was the lower extremities, a finding that was also reported in a study among Malaysian junior badminton athletes as well as in a review by Senadheera. 2,9 This injury location may be because of the rapid and repetitive lower extremity movements, such as lunges, running with high-speed changes of direction, or landing from jumps during the game, which places a heavy burden on the lower extremities. 11 Tendinopathy, especially on the patellar, was the most frequently reported type of injury by the young athletes in our study.…”

“…Only a small number of studies have investigated the relationship between sex and injury risk among badminton players and the results were conflicting, as reported in the latest review about badminton-related injury among competitive players. 2 An understanding of the most common types of injury and recognition of who is at risk are important steps toward the development of an effective injury prevention program. Such a program would be paramount in sustaining the performance of the young athletes as future professional athletes and a nation's assets.…”

“…Multiple studies implicate poor balance skills in sport injuries [ 25 , 39 42 ]. Previous studies report that lower limb is the most susceptible area for badminton-related injuries [ 43 45 ], according to some studies, accounting to 40% of the injuries in badminton players [ 46 ]. It has been shown that balance training can be used prophylactically or after acute ankle sprain to reduce the risk of future ankle sprain [ 47 ].…”
