Abstract: The aim of the present study was to outline the serological profile of hepatitis C among blood donors seen at the uberaba regional Blood Center, hemominas Foundation, over the last 14 years. The frequency of hepatitis C was compared between first-time and repeat donors and the epidemiological characteristics of those with positive and indeterminate ELISA anti-hCV (third and fourth generation) were analyzed based on the donor histories kept in the archives of the uberaba regional Blood Center. “…Predominance of blood donors without previous donation in the last year is also in accordance with other Brazilian sources such as Garcia et al (2009) and the Ministry of Health (2011). Kupek and Petry (2011) showed huge increase of 15 to 33 times in hepatitis B and hepatitis C markers in this group compared to the repeat donor, thus stressing the need to increase the percentage of the latter on a more permanent basis.…”

“…Similar results were observed in Uberaba, a neighboring city and in an epidemiological survey conducted in major Brazilian cities, where individuals aged 20 to 69 years old (1.63%) and males (1.83%) presented high anti-HCV prevalence in the Southeast region of the country (GARCIA et al, 2009;PEREIRA et al, 2013).…”

“…When compared to other risk groups, the HCV prevalence found was higher than in Uberaba [24], Pará [25], Belo Horizonte [26] but similar to observed among prisoners in Central Brazil [27] and healthcare waste workers suggesting that this profession exposes the worker to the blood and other organic fluids and raises the risk of acquiring infections transmitted by parenteral pathways. The risk of HBV acquisition by dentist was already associated to the lack of vaccination [29].…”
