Epidemiological and genetic study of 200 cases of oral cleft in the Emilia Romagna region of northern Italy

Abstract: Epidemiological and genetic variables in clefts were analyzed during the years 1978-1986 in a case-control study of congenital malformations in the Emilia Romagna region of northern Italy. Among 150,168 newborns, 200 cases of cleft were detected, yielding a prevalence of 1.33 per 1,000. These clefts consisted of 112 (0.075%) cases of cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CL +/- P) and 88 cases (0.058%) of cleft palate (CP). Coexisting abnormalities were found in 32% of cases. The heritability coefficient of … Show more

“…In Paris, most of the medical and non-medical staff in reference centres use the database. This is why we decided to use the Paris data as a proxy to discuss the whole-ofFrance data (in view of the fact that the literature concerned has not shown ecological or environmental variables influencing the diseases studied) [32][33][34]. This may explain why the prevalence differed between Paris Region and the rest of France.…”

“…14,[20][21][22] The figures for the incidence of facial clefting seem to be nearly equal among the various Caucasian populations. 10,12,14,[21][22][23] Broad disagreement is notable in regard to data for the Arab population. 7,12,16,24 Our incidence of 1.54 per 1000 births agrees with Kuwait's incidence of 1.5 24 and 1.48 12 and with the incidence in various European countries.…”

“…a finding which agrees with other reports. 5,7,12,15,20,23 Complete cleft lip with cleft palate (CLP) cases were equally distributed between males and females. In one series from Kuwait, the proportion of complete CLP in males was significantly higher.…”

“…European countries (reaching 84% in Italy; (Calzolari et al, 1988), China (78%; (Hu et al, 1982) and Brazil (reaching 85%; (Brito et al, 2011). Another evidence for this genetic role comes from recurrence risk, which is 20-30 times higher in 1 st -degree relatives of affected individuals than the population risk (Sivertsen et al, 2008;Grosen et al, 2010).…”
