Epidemiological analysis of mosquito-borne Pogosta disease in Finland, 2009

Abstract: Pogosta disease is a viral disease caused by a mosquito-borne alphavirus, Sindbis virus (SINV), and large human outbreaks of SINV infection have emerged in Finland every seven years. After a major outbreak in 2002 an epidemic was expected to take place in 2009. Data from the National Infectious Disease Registry showed a small outbreak in humans in 2009 with a total of 105 reported cases but the seven-year cycle did not recur as anticipated.

“…Similarly, SINV infections have increased in Finland since the 1970s [2,9,17] and it could also be the case for neighbouring Sweden. The present study was motivated by the lack of current information concerning SINV infection in Sweden and a possible involvement in jointrelated illnesses, which constitutes a common public health problem.…”

“…SINV is arthropod-borne and is maintained in nature by transmission between vertebrate (bird) hosts and invertebrate (mosquito) vectors (Strauss and Strauss, 1994). In humans, SINV infection is widespread in the Old World and can cause chronic polyarthritis and Pogosta disease (Kurkela et al, 2005; Sane et al, 2010). Many additional alphaviruses infect humans and can cause severe illnesses and are thus considered serious human pathogens, including Chikungunya virus, Ross River virus, and Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis virus (Griffin, 2007; Weaver and Barrett, 2004).…”

“…In 1981 Sweden reported 54 cases (Ockelbo), Russia 200 cases (Karelian) and Finland 300 cases (Pogosta) of clinically and serologically diagnosed SINV infection (Brummer-Korvenkontio et al, 2002;Espmark & Niklasson, 1984;L'Vov D et al, 1982). Outbreaks of Pogosta disease have thus far emerged every seven years since the first outbreak was noted in 1974, including a large outbreak in 2002 (Sane et al, 2010).…”
