Epidemiologic trends in lung cancer over two decades in Northern Greece: an analysis of bronchoscopic data

Abstract: Background and Aim. The relative frequency of histological subtypes of lung cancer in Europe has changed dramatically during the 20th century. The aim of this study was to explore the changing epidemiology of lung cancer in Northern Greece over the last two decades. Methods. From the extensive database of the Bronchoscopy Unit of the G. Papanicolaou General Hospital, Thessaloniki, Greece, we identified all patients with a histologic and/or cytologic report positive for lung cancer over two consecutive decades.… Show more

“…Squamous cell carcinoma, rather than adenocarcinoma, has been traditionally thought to be related to smoking. Similar results have been reported in an earlier analysis of data beginning almost four decades ago from the same Hospital, focusing in two-decade differences in another target population (the region of Thrace included) 18 . In contrast, in other populations, adenocarcinoma has been found to be the most common type 19,20 .…”

“…The finding of the prevalence of lung cancer metastases to the thyroid in our study may be explained by the fact that the incidence of this tumour is increasing among women and men in Greece as compared to incidence rates in many other countries. 39 Because of the aggressive nature of lung malignancies, patients are often treated with soothing intention from an early stage and therefore investigation for additional metastases is limited. In contrast, renal cell carcinoma is less aggressive, and patients are more likely to be further investigated and treated for metastatic disease.…”

“…The results of a more frequent distribution of advanced age (≥65 years) and male sex in SQ were concordant with those of previous publications. 4 , 5 , 20 Metastatic distributions were absolutely distinguishing, with higher metastatic scores being found in Adenoca. The metastatic sites were also significantly and differently distributed to the whole body, with tropism for lung, bone, and brain in Adenoca.…”
