Épidémies et mentalités : le choléra de 1832 en Seine-et-Oise

Abstract

L'opinion s'est alarmée, il y a trois ans, de la soudaine extension des cas de choléra dans certaines parties du monde. 1970 fut surnommée « l'année du choléra ». Trente neuf États, au moins, auraient été touchés, principalement en Orient et en Afrique. Psychose insensée pour les uns, menace sérieuse pour les autres, le choléra a de nouveau fait parler de lui.Serait-ce que le monde contemporain, dans sa mémoire collective, garde le souvenir des terribles ravages que la maladie provoqua au XIXe siècle et au début de notre siècle ? A cet égard, un retour sur le choléra du XIXe siècle se révèle fort « éclairant », et plus précisément, sur la première épidémie du siècle (1832) dans le cadre de l'ancienne Seine-et-Oise.
