“…The seroprevalence increased with age reaching 15.4% in the 60–69 years age group . In 2009, the incidence peaked in the 50–59 years age group (4.6/100 000/year) . In Sweden, of all confirmed clinical SINV infections in 1981–1989 ( N = 245) more than two thirds were diagnosed in those aged 30–59 years, while the proportion of adolescents (<20 years) was 6% .…”

“…Serological surveys in Finland [264] and Sweden [261] indicate that as much as 95% of all SINV infections may not be diagnosed. After an incubation period of four days (2-10 days range) approximately [265], patients develop some signs and symptoms that are similar to other arthritogenic alphaviruses. The main symptoms experienced by patients with the disease are rash, arthralgia, and fever [266].…”

“…In addition, RRV-infected patients with pre-dating joint disease such as OA, gout, or psoriatic arthritis complained of worse arthralgia months after disease onset [15,20]. Similarly, the SINV-related alphavirus that causes Pogosta disease has been reported to cause exacerbation of joint arthralgia in OA patients [19,80]. These observations suggest that underlying arthritic conditions may be associated with disease exacerbation after alphavirus infection.…”
