The unity between Christ and believers is an important theme inEphesians.' To communicate this unity Paul2 uses various images such as the Body of Christ, the building whose cornerstone3 is Christ, the Bride of Christ. Each of these brings its own perspective to the solidarity that exists between Christ and his followers. Still the question remains as to whether s6me overall pattern of thinking is discernible in the author's presentation, a pattern flexible enough to allow varying perspectives, yet sufficient to bring a certain conceptual cohesion. Of course, the ins and outs of such a broad question cannot be explored in detail here. However, the clear association between Christ's exaltation (1.20) and the believer's exaltation (2.6) does, we think, provide an important glimpse and clue into the way Ephesians envisions the bond between Christ and believers.
