EPANET Modelling of a High Head Pumped-Storage Hydropower Facility

Abstract: Abstract:A complex hydraulic facility is modelled in EPANET. The system consists in an underground high head Hydro Power Plant (HPP) and a Pumping Station (PS), operating in a pumped-storage hydropower scheme with three reservoirs. The complexity of the system is due to its unusual configuration, where the PS discharges the water directly into the HPP penstock. The PS is equipped with 2 × 10 MW pumps. The HPP is equipped with 2 × 75 MW Francis turbines. The simulations allow assessing the energy production and… Show more

“…The literature study begins with a collection of books, written materials, and references relevant to the research. Research conducted by [12] used Epanet to model hydropower plants with the Darcy-Weisbach formulation to compute the head losses with the roughness. Research conducted by [13] conducted hydraulic simulations using Epanet 2.2 to calculate pressure and flow values, to determine pipe leaks that occurred in the research area.…”

“…The cost of power production is also used as an optimization criterion. [17] determines the power generation level of the PSHPP depending on the water level in the upper reservoir as in the case of the pumped-storage facility located on the Sebes , River (Gâlceag, Romania).…”
