Eosinopenia of Acute Infection

Abstract: A B S T R A C T One distinctive aspect of the response to acute inflammation involves a rapid and persistent decrease in the numbers of circulating eosinophils, yet the mechanisms ofthis eosinopenia are undefined. One possibility is that the abrupt eosinopenia may be the result of release of small amounts of the chemotactic factors ofacute inflammation into the circulation. These studies were designed to examine the numbers of circulating eosinophils after an intravenous injection of zymosan-activated serum, p… Show more

“…DCFH is trapped inside the cells and oxidized to the highly fluorescent DCF by a variety of reactive species such as HO • and ROO • [24] and also by RNS like • NO and ONOO − [18]. In 1983, Bass et al [46] used, for the first time, the probe DCFH to measure H 2 O 2 in neutrophils. Later, it was reported that the oxidation of DCFH by H 2 O 2 is an indirect reaction since it depends on the peroxidase activity [47,48].…”

“…To demonstrate this in human breast carcinoma MCF-7 cells, these cells were incubated with the non¯uorescent probe, 2',7'-dichloro¯uorescin, (DCFH-DA) (Bass et al, 1983). This probe enters the cells and can be oxidized in the presence of ROS, generating the¯uorescent compound, 2',7', dichloro¯uorescein (DCF).…”
