Eos: conceptual design for a demonstrator of hybrid optical detector technology

Abstract: Eos is a technology demonstrator, designed to explore the capabilities of hybrid event detection technology, leveraging both Cherenkov and scintillation light simultaneously. With a fiducial mass of four tons, Eos is designed to operate in a high-precision regime, with sufficient size to utilize time-of-flight information for full event reconstruction, flexibility to demonstrate a range of cutting edge technologies, and simplicity of design to facilitate potential future deployment at alternati… Show more

“…The PTB is a highly flexible, programmable and configurable trigger board and its versions are currently also used in the ProtoDUNE and EOS experiments [2,3]. The board houses a commercial MicroZed TM board containing a Zynq ® -7Z020 System-On-a-Chip (SoC), which provides userprogrammable FPGA logic and a processing system with direct access to the FPGA.…”

“…An understanding of the availability and performance of different large-area PMTs is crucial for future experiments, such as Theia [6], in the selection of sensors [7], as well as for accurately simulating the PMT response in existing detectors. The R14688-100 is one such large-area PMT, that will be used for the first time in a large-scale experiment in the Eos detector [8].…”

“…Eos is a 20-ton detector, designed to perform a demonstration of key technology for future advanced neutrino detectors [8] that plan to distinguish Cherenkov and scintillation light. This technology includes spectral sorting of photons [9], novel types of liquid scintillators [10,11], and fast timing photodetectors [12].…”

“…The THEIA detector will also be able to work on the sun, earth (Geo), and reactor neutrinos. The EOS [22] experiment is considered a portable detector with approximately four tons (fiducial) and is currently under construction at the University of California-Berkeley laboratories in the U.S.A. The ANNIE experiment conducted at Fermilab deployed WbLS in its experimental setup through the utilization of the SANDI box [23,24].…”
