Background Comorbid depression and anxiety in men with localised prostate cancer (CaP) largely go undiagnosed and untreated and their effects on health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in men with CaP should not be underestimated. We examined the prevalence of depression and anxiety and its association with HRQOL in men about to commence treatment for CaP and the differences between treatment groups, radical prostatectomy (RP) and radiation therapy (RT). Method One hundred and seven participants from a longitudinal prospective observational study assessing depression, anxiety and HRQOL in men with localised CaP (DAHCaP), were used in this cross-sectional analysis. Data were collected shortly before participants were scheduled to receive their treatment. The Centre for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), the State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), the Memorial Anxiety Scale for Prostate Cancer (MAX-PC), the European Organisation for Research and Treatment in Cancer Quality of Life questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30) and (EORTC QLQ-PR25) were used in this analysis. Results Symptoms of depression pre-treatment were noted in 39.3%, state anxiety 28%, trait anxiety 31.4% and prostate cancer anxiety in 12.1% of participants. Statistically significant correlations ( P ≤ .05) with the CES-D and a cluster of symptoms on the EORTC QLQ-C30 domains for Global Health (rs = −.35), fatigue (rs = .38), pain (rs = .32), dyspnoea (rs = .28), insomnia (rs = .30) and finance (rs = .26) and EORTC QLQ-PR25 domains for urinary symptoms (rs = .43), bowel (rs = .43) and hormone replacement therapy (HRT) (rs = .41) were observed. Statistically significant correlations were also noted between the STAI-S and EORTC QLQ-C30 and EORTC QLQ-PR25. No statistically significant difference was noted between treatments. Conclusion More men were depressed than anxious with significant associations with HRQOL prior to commencement of treatment. CaP treatments should focus not only on the prevailing indisposition but include a psychooncological and HRQOL assessment at pre-treatment in high-risk individuals.

Introduction.In recent years, patient-reported outcomes have played an increasingly important role in the evaluation of the effectiveness of treatments as aspects of health-related quality of life (e.g. physical, emotional, and psychosocial), and are taken into account in the selection of treatment methods and complementary management (e.g. nursing care or physiotherapy).Objective. The aim of this pilot study was to assess changes in the health-related quality of life in a prostate cancer population before and 3 months after radical prostatectomy. The main motivation for the study is the small number of studies using validated tools to assess the quality of life of men in the Polish population suffering from prostate cancer. Materials and method. The study concerned 31 newly-diagnosed prostate cancer patients who qualified for radical prostatectomy. Quality of life assessment was performed twice -first before surgery, and then 3 months afterwards -using the EORTC QLQ-C30 and EORTC QLQ-PR25 questionnaires. Results. Comparison of baseline and 3-month follow-up results revealed significant deteriorations in patients' quality of life across various domains, with the clinically and statistically most significant changes being observed on the emotional, social, and role functioning scales. Conclusions. Radical prostatectomy contributed to decreased quality of life 3 months postoperatively. The psychosocial domains of the quality of life are more strongly affected than the physical domains.

On the completion of the year 2022 for Oncology in Clinical PracticeWith this issue of Oncology in Clinical Practice (OCP) we are closing the current volume. This has motivated the Editors to share some insights into the Journal's status quo, as well as to acknowledge those who actively supported us during this year that is about to end.We have managed to publish all six issues in the 2022 volume on a timely basis, that is no later than the last day of every second month, meeting again this basic criterion of any journal's credibility. The volume has included 11 research papers, 18 reviews, and 7 case reports. Three new Society guidelines have also become available: the first on diagnostic and therapeutic management of thoracic neoplasms, the second on skin carcinomas and the third on melanoma patients in issues 2022/1, 2022/2 and 2022/6, respectively. At the moment, when the last issue is being published, there have been 18 early publications in the 'online first' panel.This year, the article that has, so far, generated most interest in terms of downloads (over 400) and views (over 2000) has been the review titled: 'EORTC QLQ-C30 and EORTC QLQ-PR25 -tools for assessing the quality of life of men suffering from prostate cancer' by Jurys et al. from the Medical University of Silesia, Poland [1]. Their review describes important areas of health-related quality of life in patients with prostate cancer. Some of the challenges facing this line of research are elucidated. Assessment of quality of life in cancer patients is an integral part of clinical trials, and it is very important in clinical practice due to significant improvements in the management of patients.
