Enzyme inhibitory and antioxidant activities of traditional medicinal plants: Potential application in the management of hyperglycemia

Abstract: BackgroundTraditional Indian and Australian medicinal plant extracts were investigated to determine their therapeutic potential to inhibit key enzymes in carbohydrate metabolism, which has relevance to the management of hyperglycemia and type 2 diabetes. The antioxidant activities were also assessed.MethodsThe evaluation of enzyme inhibitory activity of seven Australian aboriginal medicinal plants and five Indian Ayurvedic plants was carried out against α-amylase and α-glucosidase. Antioxidant activity was det… Show more

“…Antioxidants interrupt free radical chain oxidation by donating hydrogen from hydroxyl groups to form a stable end product, diphenylpicrylhydrazine (DPPH), which does not initiate or propagate further oxidation of lipids. This causes the purple-coloured DPPH to lose its chromophore and turn it into a yellowish product (α,α-diphenyl-β-picryl hydrazine) [63][64][65].…”

“…25 For the assay, HepG2 cells with den sity of 1×10 4 per well were seeded in 96well black plate in triplicates. On the next day, cells were treated by fresh culture medium contain ing different concentrations of vitexin and isovitexin for 24 h, and later washed with 1X phosphate buffered saline (PBS).…”

“…Herbs like turmeric, 1 fenugreek, ginger, garlic and holy basil 2 are integral part of Ayurvedic formulation. There have been several studies on the anti oxidant activities of various herbs 3 /plants 4 /extracts 5 with medicinal val ues. However, the exact mechanism and mode of action of these formu lations/extracts is not known.…”
