Blood pressure (BP) above optimal (p120/p80 mmHg) is established as a major cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factor. Prevalence of adverse BP is high in most adult populations; until recently research has been sparse on reasons for this. Since the 1980s, epidemiologic studies confirmed that salt, alcohol intake, and body mass relate directly to BP; dietary potassium, inversely. Several other nutrients also probably influence BP. The DASH feeding trials demonstrated that with the multiple modifications in the DASH combination diet, SBP/DBP (SBP: systolic blood pressure, DBP: diastolic blood pressure) was sizably reduced, independent of calorie balance, alcohol intake, and BP reduction with decreased dietary salt. A key challenge for research is to elucidate specific nutrients accounting for this effect. The general aim of the study was to clarify influences of multiple nutrients on SBP/DBP of individuals over and above effects of Na, K, alcohol, and body mass. Specific aims were, in a cross-sectional epidemiologic study of 4680 men and women aged 40-59 years from 17 diverse population samples in China, Japan, UK, and USA, test 10 prior hypotheses on relations of macronutrients to SBP/DBP and on role of dietary factors in inverse associations of education with BP; test four related subgroup hypotheses; explore associations with SBP/DBP of multiple other nutrients, urinary metabolites, and foods. For these purposes, for all 4680 participants, with standardized high-quality methods, assess individual intake of 76 nutrients from four 24-h dietary recalls/person; measure in two timed 24-h urine collections/person 24-h excretion of Na, K, Ca, Mg, creatinine, amino acids; microalbuminuria; multiple nutrients and metabolites by nuclear magnetic resonance and high-pressure liquid chromatography. Based on eight SBP/DBP measurements/person, and data on multiple possible confounders, utilize mainly multiple linear regression and quantile analyses to test prior hypotheses and explore relations of multiple dietary and urinary variables to SBP/DBP of individuals. The 4680 INTERMAP participants are equally divided across four age/gender strata: diverse in ethnicity, education, occupation, physical activity; use of cigarettes, alcohol; diagnosed high BP, CVD, diabetes; CVD family history; women vary in parity, use of contraceptive medication and hormone replacement therapy.

RESUMO -O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da substituição do milho pela farinha de mandioca de varredura, em dietas de cabras Saanen em lactação, sobre a degradabilidade potencial, efetiva e efetiva corrigida das rações, bem como sobre o pH ruminal e as concentrações de amônia ruminal, uréia plasmática e uréia no leite em cabras em lactação. Foram utilizadas quatro cabras há 100 dias em lactação. O delineamento utilizado foi o quadrado latino 4 x4, em que os tratamentos consistiram em níveis de 0, 33, 67 e 100% de substituição do milho pela farinha de mandiocade varredura. A degradabilidade das rações experimentais foi determinada em bovinos pela técnica in situ. Apesar de a degradabilidade potencial das dietas experimentais ter tido pequena variação para MS, PB e amido, a degradabilidade efetiva e a degradabilidade efetiva corrigida da MS, da PB e do amido aumentaram com a substituição do milho pela farinha de varredura de mandioca. Os tratamentos não influenciaram o pH ruminal, bem como as concentrações de NH 3 -ruminal, uréia plasmática e uréia do leite. Houve correlação positiva (P<0,05; r = 0,9288) entre as concentrações de uréia plasmática e a uréia do leite, permitindo estimativas da uréia plasmática a partir da equação UP(mg/dL) = 0,7672UL (mg/dL) + 7,4894 (R 2 =0,8628). Conclui-se que a farinha de mandioca de varredura pode substituir totalmente o milho e ser utilizada em rações de cabras em lactação, em nível de até 30% da ingestão de MS, sem prejuízos para parâmetros ruminais e metabolismo do nitrogênio.Palavras-chave: cabras leiteiras, degradabilidade, mandioca, rúmen, uréia Replacement of Corn by Cassava By-Product Meal in the Lactating Goat Diets: Effects on Diet Degradability, Ruminal Fermentation and Plasma and Milk Urea ConcentrationsABSTRACT -The objectives of this work were to evaluate effects of replacing corn by cassava by-product meal, in diets of Saanen lactating goats, on potencial, effective and corrected effective degradability of diets with steers, and on ruminal pH and ruminal ammonia, plasma urea nitrogen (PUN) and milk urea nitrogen (MUN) concentrations in lactating goats. Potential degradability of experimental diets showed small variation for dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP) and starch (S) but effective and corrected effective degradability increased as corn was replaced by cassava by-product meal. Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major public health problem worldwide especially in resource-limited countries of Africa and Asia. The disease is curable with drugs but information on biochemical changes and oxidative indices due to anti-TB drugs is not readily available. This study was designed to investigate in vivo effects of anti-TB drugs in male Wistar rats. Fourteen adult male rats were randomly divided into two groups of seven animals each. The first group served as the control and was given normal saline while the second group received isoniazid (INH), rifampicin (RIF), pyrazinamide (PZA) and ethambutol (ETB) in combination. The drugs were dissolved in normal saline and therapeutic doses [INH (5 mg/kg), RIF (10 mg/kg), PZA (15 mg/kg) and ETB (15 mg/kg)] were given by oral gavage thrice in a week for eight consecutive weeks. Estimation of serum enzymes and other biochemical parameters were assayed by standard methods. Results indicate that there was an insignificant increase in final body weight of anti-TB treated animals relative to the control (p>0.05). In addition, there were significant decrease in renal and cardiac glutathione-s-transferase activities in the treated group relative to the control (p<0.05) while hepatic glutathione peroxidase activity was significantly reduced in treated group when compared with the control (p<0.05). Furthermore, triglyceride level was significantly increased in the treated group (p<0.05). Liver marker enzymes (aspartate and alanine transaminases), renal and cardiac catalase and superoxide dismutase activities and urea levels were insignificantly increased in treated animals relative to the control (p>0.05). These findings suggest that anti-TB drugs induce redox imbalance resulting in the depletion of enzymatic antioxidant parameters in rats.
