Enzymatic treatments for cotton

Abstract: Textile processing is a growing industry that traditionally has used a lot of water, energy and harsh chemicals. Conventional chemical processes are generally severe and fi bre damage may occur. Enzymes are characterized by their ability to operate under mild conditions and as a result processes can be carried out without further damaging the fi bers. Enzymes are also readily biodegradable and therefore potentially harmless and environmentally friendly. Furthermore, the use of enzymes results in reduced proces… Show more

“…Since lotus fibers chiefly cellulosic in nature like cotton, the use of enzymes is preferred for sustainable wet processing of lotus fabric. [25] In this study, application of cellulase enzyme explored for eco-friendly wet processing of commercially available lotus fabric, effect of the enzymatic treatment on surface and bulk properties of the lotus fibers characterized with various characterization techniques such as Attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), water contact angle, and also bulk properties studied by % weight loss, X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), tensile strength measurement, wet out time, water absorption percentage. The enzymatic treatment studied with different ChemistrySelect process variables and optimized for removal of non-cellulosic impurities, improvement in surface properties of the fabric and thus better absorption of natural product to impart antimicrobial property and enhanced natural dyeing.…”

“…Thus, use of enzymes as alternative to wet chemical process have been developed or under the process of development, but use of enzymes for lotus fiber/fabric treatment has not explored. Since lotus fibers chiefly cellulosic in nature like cotton, the use of enzymes is preferred for sustainable wet processing of lotus fabric [25] . In this study, application of cellulase enzyme explored for eco‐friendly wet processing of commercially available lotus fabric, effect of the enzymatic treatment on surface and bulk properties of the lotus fibers characterized with various characterization techniques such as Attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR‐FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), water contact angle, and also bulk properties studied by % weight loss, X‐Ray Diffraction (XRD), Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), tensile strength measurement, wet out time, water absorption percentage.…”
