“…Another aliquot of the solution was transferred to the hydrogenation vessel, platinum oxide equal to about half the weight of the vitamin was added, and hydrogen was passed through the solution for seven hours after which no further change in pH occurred. 8 The resulting solution of Bllr was transferred through the fritted glass filter to the polarograph cell, the entire system being well flushed with oxygen-free nitrogen. The polarogram was then taken.…”

“…At this time I. C. Gunsalus spent a few months in our laboratory as a Guggenheim Fellow and he and Seymour Korkes took a closer look at the early steps of pyruvate oxidation in E. coli extracts. They found that NAD was reduced in the presence o f pyruvate and CoA, which indicated the occurrence o f the reaction, pyruvate + CoA + NAD + = acetylCoA + CO2 + NADH + H + (12). Fractionation of this system indicated that at least two enzyme fractions were required.…”

“…I went to Ithaca for a few days of sailing, and I assembled the diata, which Carol typed into tables and sent with a letter to greet the return of Severo and Seymour to New York. There they cast the paper for the Journal of Biological Ch emis try (78). Such experiences are as indelible as infrequent.…”
