Enzymatic coating of cotton with poly (ethylene glutarate)

Abstract: a b s t r a c tThe present work reports the coating of cotton fabrics with poly (ethylene glutarate) for the first time. Cotton fabric were soaked in diethyl glutarate and ethylene glycol diacetate without addition of extra solvent. The reactions were catalyzed by lipase from Thermomyces lanuginosus at 40 • C in water bath during 7 h. The polyester coating was extracted and analyzed by MALDI-TOF and NMR. Monomers, dimers and trimers of poly (ethylene glutarate) were found. The modified cotton fabrics showed be… Show more

“…Hand hydrophobic cotton fabrics are gaining interest because of additional characteristics like antifouling, friction reduction, self-cleaning and water repellence [312] hence, various surface modifications are already in use for making cotton fabric hydrophobic. In this regard Zhao [312] adopted an environmentally-friendly and cheap method, by coating cotton fabric with poly (ethylene glutarate) and the coated fabric showed improved hydrophobicity and wrinkle resistance. The wrinkle resistance was improved due to in situ enzymatic formation of monomers and oligomers of poly (ethylene glutarate) at the surface of cotton fabric.…”

“…Most of the known aliphatic polyesters can be regarded as biobased polymers [6,7] as the majority of the starting reactants can be obtained from biomass feedstock. Aliphatic polyesters have superior biodegradability, biocompatibility and probable bioresorbability, and can be applied to diverse potential fields like textiles manufacturing [5,8], food packaging as well as biomedical and pharmaceutical fields [5,[9][10][11][12]. The enzymatic polymerization of aliphatic polyesters has been considered therefore as a promising alternative to the traditional chemical polymerization.…”

“…These properties allow them to be employed in a variety of biochemical reactions, including acidolysis, aminolysis, alcoholysis when in an aqueous solution, esterification, transesterification and acylation when in non-aqueous media [13,14]. Based on these specific properties, lipases are widely applied as bio-catalysts in the textile field [8], food manufacture [15], biomedical and pharmaceutical industry [16], and energy (biodiesel) production [17,18]. Lipases can also be described as bio-catalysts for various organic solvents [19] and emulsions [20].…”

“…However, these technologies are constricted by their sustainability and environmental concerns and cost. An ecologically greener alternative to current practice is presented by Zhao and collaborators [4], who carried out a lipasecatalyzed solvent-free synthesis of poly (ethylene glutarate) monomers and oligomers to coat the surface of cotton fabrics for the first time.…”
