Enzootic Intranasal Tumour of Goats in Italy

Abstract: Summary An outbreak of enzootic intranasal tumour (EIT) in a goat herd in Central Italy is described. From October 1990 to September 1992 41 tumors were diagnosed in goats ranging in age from 6 months to 6 years and of both the Alpine and Saanen breeds. Clinically the affected goats showed nasal discharge, facial swelling, sneezing and snoring respiration and weight loss. Post‐mortem examinations revealed uni‐ or bilateral tumours of the olfactory mucous membrane. The neoplasms were classified as low grade ade… Show more

“…In goats, tumors seem to be less frequent, although some cases of EIT have been reported in recent years. 4,5,10,14,17,23 The enzootic intranasal tumor is a chronic and afebrile disease characterized by a profuse initial seromucous and then purulent nasal exudate associated with clinical signs of respiratory distress. In the late period of the disease, facial swelling, sometimes with seromucous exudation, is found because of nasal bone erosion and skin ulceration.…”

“…5,6,11,23 After numerous etiologic hypotheses, from environmental to genetic factors, a viral cause was demonstrated. Viral-like particles, compatible with a type D retrovirus, were isolated from nasal fluid, and neoplastic tissue and successful experimental transmission of EIT from goat to goat confirmed this hypothesis.…”

“…The gross pathology and histology of ENA in sheep and goats appear to be identical (De las Heras et al, 2003). The association between ENA and enzootic nasal tumour virus (ENTV) is well established (Cousens et al, , 1999De las Heras et al, 1991a, b, 1993Vitelozzi et al, 1993), although less well characterized than the relationship between OPA and jaagsiekte sheep retrovirus (JSRV) (Palmarini et al, 1999). These viruses are closely related to each other and to sheep endogenous retroviral sequences (ovERVs) at the nucleic acid level (Hecht et al, 1994;Cousens et al, 1996Cousens et al, , 1999.…”

“…ENTV can be found in the nasal fluid of animals with intranasal tumors, which eventually progress and cause severe cranial deformations and respiratory blockage, resulting in death (41). ENTV is closely related to jaagsiekte sheep retrovirus (JSRV) (Ͼ95% overall amino acid similarity) (4), which is the causative agent of ovine pulmonary adenocarcinoma (also called sheep pulmonary adenomatosis or jaagsiekte) (30).…”
