Minority language studies have received increasing attention over the last decade in Iran. Drawing on Spolsky’s (Spolsky, Bernard. 2004. Language policy. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press) language policy theoretical framework, this inquiry reports on the language ideologies, practices, and management efforts of an under-explored group of Kurdish families residing in the city of Kermanshah. To this end, semi-structured interviews and ethnographic fieldwork guided the collection of data from 40 Kurdish–Persian bilingual parents. The thematic analysis of data revealed glaring inconsistencies among the three elements of family language policy (FLP). That is parents’ strong attachment to Kurdish did not necessarily translate into their language practices and efforts. The results also suggest that the studied parents adopted a subtractive approach to their children’s proficiency in Kurdish. We argue that parents are not the core force in heritage language maintenance and there are other external factors determining the transmission of the home language.

En este artículo describimos el modo en que los resultados de una investigación antropológica fueron usados para la creación de una unidad curricular denominada Historia Social de la Lengua Guaraní. Esto se produjo en el marco de la elaboración del diseño curricular del primer profesorado oficial de guaraní de la provincia de Corrientes, proceso en el que las autoras fuimos partícipes. Por lo tanto, para describir cómo surgió el espacio curricular lo enmarcamos en el proceso que implicó y la trama de actores y agencias intervinientes en la elaboración del diseño curricular e instalación del Profesorado de Guaraní. Si bien el profesorado se inició en un ISFD del Sistema de Educación Superior de la provincia, otras Instituciones de Educación Superior (IES) convencionales e interculturales fueron partícipes de este proceso. Reseñamos la investigación antropológica y los aspectos derivados del estudio que se consideraron para el diseño del seminario Historia Social de la Lengua Guaraní; presentamos sus ejes de contenido, perfil formativo y orientaciones metodológicas tal como figuran en el diseño curricular. Finalmente, describimos los primeros pasos del desarrollo de este espacio curricular en el primer año de la carrera del profesorado en el 2023.

Russian Federation, being de jure and de facto linguistically diverse multilingual country, can be described, at the same time, as being under a strong influence of monolingual language ideology, with Russian totally domineering in most public spheres. Minority languages and especially languages of migrants lack official recognition and support, and their speakers often have to face prejudices and negative stereotypes. The paper aims at revealing language ideology prevailing in modern Russia through analysis of attitudes to languages other than Russian as they are expressed in discourse about language, i.e. metadiscourse. When approaching it, it is important to distinguish state discourse (manifestation of official language policy) and public discourse (collective attitudes towards certain sublanguages and their users expressed more or less directly). The analysis shows that over the past two decades, official language ideology in Russia has shifted from guaranteeing linguistic equality and diversity to having an emphasis on unity and purity and giving support to the Russian language. This reorientation is realized through status planning, corpus planning, and acquisition planning. At the level of public discourse, analysis of collective attitudes towards the languages used by non-native speakers demonstrates that a significant part of the Russian-speaking population express negative attitudes towards non-native speakers and their poor Russian language skills, which once again confirms that there is dominant monolingualism and purism in public discourse. However, language practices in Russia are gradually becoming more diverse which can become a challenge for monolingualism and purism in future.
