Envisioning Systems Engineering as a Transdisciplinary Venture

Abstract: We envision that systems engineering can be transformed into a truly transdisciplinary discipline ‐ a foundational meta‐discipline that supports and enables collaboration between all the disciplines that should be involved in conceiving, building, using and evolving a system such that it will continue to be successful and fit for purpose as time passes. Systems engineering can be applied in different ways depending on the situation and how well current systems engineering process patterns are matched to the pr… Show more

“…Therefore, other approaches to LCE propose Model-based Systems Engineering (MBSE) procedures, notations, and tools as an adequate foundation. Model-based Systems Engineering (MBSE) is the model-based and IT-supported application of systems engineering (Hillary Sillitto et al, 2019) to optimize modeling and to promote a common understanding of the system under development (Dumitrescu et al, 2021;INCOSE, 2021). As such, holistic approaches for MBSE typically consist of a method, a (software) tool and a (graphical) modeling language (Friedenthal et al, 2015).…”

“…Methodological support for deriving and framing the results was inspired by Sillitto et al (2018). Analyzing the problem, deriving the mechanisms and exploring their effect and efficiency is viewed from the problem, solution, and transformation space perspectives, in the context of this study interpreted as follows:…”

“…SE has recently been defined as “a transdisciplinary approach that applies systems principles and concepts to enable the successful realization and use of engineered systems and whole‐system solutions. 49 ” A SE approach to developing an organizational roadmap can help practitioners create an artifact with visual elements that support their unique communication goals. The SE process begins by eliciting the key information that needs to be conveyed by the roadmap, so that content can be aligned to organizational requirements.…”
