Environmentally-friendly magnetoelectric ceramic multilayer composites by water-based tape casting

Abstract: Magnetoelectric composites are an enabling material technology for a range of novel devices like electrically-tunable magnetic microwave components or room-temperature-operation high-sensitivity magnetic sensors. Among the different approaches under development, cofired ceramic layered composites provide large effective magnetoelectric coefficients and improved reliability. However, miniaturization and processing up-scaling remain an issue. This can be addressed by using tape casting technology to prepare mult… Show more

“…Note that these two compositions were the only ones for which said temperature was below the onset one for alkali volatilization, and thus, below the temperature used for sintering (1110 • C). Additionally, all ceramic materials showed grains with core-shell structure, which is frequently observed in LKNNT materials [31,34,37,47] when conventional solid state synthesis from alkaline carbonates and Ta and Nb oxides is carried out. It has been associated with compositional inhomogeneities, so that Nb-and K-rich cores are surrounded by Ta-rich shells [31].…”

“…According to the current state of knowledge, ceramic-ceramic composite materials can be formed by a variety of methods. The most frequently used methods include hot pressing [5,6], extrusion [7,8], injection moulding [9,10], slip casting [11,12], tape casting [13,14], electrophoretic deposition [15,16] or centrifugal slip casting [17,18].…”

“…This position is determined by the charge carrier concentration and mobility of the conductive component, as well as by the length through which carriers can move before being blocked (besides by transport across the interfaces). This often results in a distinctive, yet complex dependence of permittivity on the dimension of the conductive component (the CFO particles in this case) [53]. Unlike the dielectric constant, the loss tangent at 1 kHz-whose values were found to range between 0.013 and 0.140-showed no correlation with relative density or microstructure.…”
