Environmentally Controlled Induction of Primary Male Gonochorists From Eggs of the Self-Fertilizing Hermaphroditic Fish, Rivulus Marmoratus Poey

Abstract: 1. Rivulus marmoratus is the only known hermaphroditic fish species naturally self-fertilizing. Tissue grafts between wild-caught fish and their uniparental laboratory descendants give the autograft reaction, indicating propagation by selfing in the wild also. Only hermaphrodites have been found in the wild locally, although selfing through more than 10 uniparental laboratory generations yielded a few primary male gonochorists, under 5% in contrast to over 95% that were hermaphrodites. Females seem to be non-e… Show more

“…In agreement with this hypothesis, there are 1% of males in natural populations of Kryptolebias marmoratus (Rivulidae) in Florida. However, rearing them at 19 °C (lower temperature than in the natural environment) resulted in a 100% male population (Harrington, 1967). Besides, this species presents a higher sex ratio when juveniles are kept at high temperature (30 °C).…”

“…Since the two strains come from different geographic locations (DAN from Belize and PAN-RS from Panama), the observed difference in sex ratio may be a unique feature of the groups in question. Since all the fish in the laboratory were maintained at 25 ± 1°C, the observed difference in the number of primary males may not be due to the artificial environment of the laboratory, as male induction has previously been reported to occur when embryos are incubated between 18 and 20°C, (Harrington 1967, Harrington & Kallman 1968. Additional field and laboratory studies are necessary to determine the influence of environmental conditions on male occurrence and to clarify its role in a population dominated by hermaphrodites.…”

“…In fish, the thyroid is unencapsulated and normally located near the ventral aorta. Lesions that were probably thyroid hyperplasia occurred in rivulus in low temperature, low salinity environments (Harrington 1967). Ectopic follicles occur in liver, kidney, spleen, and several other organs of some fish species (Hoover 1984) but have not been observed in rivulus.…”
