The diligent use of capital of all forms contributes to sustainability. In fact, capital employment is a common factor in sustainability research and in the practice of sustainability management. For example, capital usage is included in research in environmental sustainability in the context of sustainable consumption. Product/Service Systems (PSS), which includes product sharing as one concrete form, has been addressed in research on that context. However, virtually no literature provides concrete, theory-based methods for quantifying the effects of sharing products. The goal of this paper is to describe the potential contribution of portfolio theory in order to quantify the effects and optimize the employment of capital in a theoretical and quantitative manner in the context of sustainability. Practices tied to the prescriptions of portfolio theory can contribute to environmental sustainability. The core perspective can be summarized as follows: the pooled, portfolio approach to asset management yields a reduction in assets employed and used relative to the volume of demanded resources used for need fulfillment. To reach this goal, the paper first provides a brief literature review from the "finance side" of literature. Then, the "engineering side" literature offers a few examples of others who have applied the prescriptions of portfolio theory to "engineering" application. After that, it provides an overview of the core issues and implications of portfolio theory, and develops some ideas to support application of portfolio theory. The provided insights illustrate how portfolio principles applied outside the arena of investments can yield benefits, including the fulfillment of needs with the least resource used -a core principle in sustainability. In particular, the "pooling" of assets/services to meet uncertain demands from different users of an asset/service pool may yield benefit from diversification effects. Furthermore, the paper offers additional avenues for future research. It describes how this special application of portfolio theory outside the realm of finance can yield benefits that positively affect the creation of value and resource use in an economy at large.

The value of a service system should be evaluated using multiple indicators, such as company profitability, consumer satisfaction, or employee satisfaction to realize an ecosystem in society. This study examines the mechanisms of service systems with a multi-agent simulation model consisting of a company, employees, and consumers based on game theory. The proposed model is intended for a basic service business in which employees provide services to consumers directly based on their skill. In this model, first, a company player sets the price of a service and salary of employees. Then, employees decide whether to acquire resources, such as skills, with their efforts (costs) to satisfy either consumers’ needs or not. Then the employees acquire their profits (equivariant of satisfaction) not only from acquired salary but also from the reflection of consumer satisfaction. However, consumers have their needs structure, as gain tables, and decide whether and from whom to purchase. A consumer’s profit is calculated using his/her satisfaction with the service provided using a certain employee and the price paid for the service. Based on the model proposed above, we conducted a multi-agent simulation where company, employee consumer players make decision to maximize their own profits. From the basic simulation results, two convergent patterns are acquired according to the initial values of price and salary. In the second simulation, the heterogeneity of consumer needs is considered in the model based on questionnaire survey results on actual consumer behaviors related to hair salons (n=2472). With a factor analysis of 13 questionnaire items on lifestyles, four lifestyle factors are extracted. Based on the survey results, consumer players of four types are introduced into the simulation to analyze which services are selected in the service system. Through the simulation, four convergent patterns are acquired. In those patterns, consumers of different types are included according to the types of services. With those results, this paper presents a discussion of the design of a new service ecosystem through the comparison between acquired convergent solutions and existing business models.

Product-service systems (PSS), which create value by integrating physical products and services, have received much attention as a promising option to increase manufacturers’ revenue and reduce environmental impact. The process of designing a PSS requires collaboration among various experts who use domain-specific knowledge. Therefore, several researches have been investigated for developing design tools tailored to their expertise. However, while the specialization of design tools can be useful for experts, it hinders companies from ensuring the integrity of design information in different design elements. This results in the failure in achieving expected benefits. To address these issues, this study applies the concept of interoperability to PSS design to integrate design information from different domains. In particular, ontological descriptions is adopted to achieve semantic interoperability in different design elements. The application of the proposed ontology to a lecture on PSS design highlights that the proposed method is effective for integrating information on PSS design elements and those between value creation and capture.
