Environmental Variability Of The Ponto-Caspian And Mediterranean Basins During The Last Climatic Macrocycle

Abstract: This paper reviews reconstructions of the the evolution of the Ponto-Caspian basin system to certain parts of the Pontian-Mediterranean system in order to analyze their correlation and response of the systems to the global climate change. The Ponto–Caspian and Mediterranean basins belong to different types of water basins and evolved differently in the Late Pleistocene responding in different ways to the global climate change. The paleogeographic reconstructions and correlation analysis of the Late Pleistocene… Show more

“…This stage, which is locally named Atelian lasted to around 48 ka [42,83,86]. The maximum low stand during the Atelian is estimated at -120 to -140 m exposing vast areas around the Caspian Sea [87][88][89][90][91][92][93]. Recent research on the northern coasts of the Caspian Sea documents mammalian remains including mammoth, horse and reindeer in the Atelian deposits.…”

“…At the same time, only a few endemics have been found in these areas (see Table 2). Low diversity in these areas can also be explained by the influence of ancient periods of cooling and glaciation, especially the significant influence of the cold climate in Pleistocene [94,95]. “…
