Environmental sustainability and interaction

Abstract: By its nature, the discipline of human computer interaction must take into consideration the issues that are most pertinent to humans. We believe that the CHI community faces an unanswered challenge in the creation of interactive systems: environmental sustainability. For example, climate scientists argue that the most serious consequences of climate change can be averted, but only if fundamental changes are made. The goal of this SIG is to raise awareness of these issues in the CHI community and to start a co… Show more

“…Humancomputer interaction research has a well-established tradition of attention to socially relevant issues [15], including some initial explorations of environmental sustainability, e.g., [22,43]. Elevated interest in this topic has recently led to increased research efforts, as well as reflective discussion of the role of interactive technologies and design in addressing environmental challenges [19,31].…”

“…Early on in Sustainable HCI [32], a distinction was drawn between 'sustainability in design', which explores how to reduce the impact of the technology itself, and 'sustainability through design', looking into ways that technology could developed to impact on other areas of sustainability concern. To address the growth trends of streaming on-demand background media through it maybe appropriate to apply 'in design' angle.…”

“…Thus, the role of IS design in developing interactive systems for sustainable environment is being pressed in both IS and HCI communities. So far, most of this work has been on a grand scale of proposals, but the first steps toward meeting the new challenge in the creation of interactive systems, environmental sustainability, have been taken, e.g., [24]. However, rather than focusing on the grand global climate management challenges, in this paper, we report from the perspective of a micro-climate control (greenhouse and plants) research project [25].…”
