Environmental Sustainability and Energy-Efficient Supply Chain Management: A Review of Research Trends and Proposed Guidelines

Abstract: This paper conducts a structured review on the topic of energy efficiency and environmental sustainability in the supply chain management context to define research trends on the topic and identify research gaps. The review is carried out using the largest databases of peer-reviewed literature (Scopus and Web of Science). A sample of 122 papers focusing on the topic of energy-efficient and sustainable supply chain management was selected and analyzed through descriptive and content analysis. The review highlig… Show more

“…In addition to emissions of a single vehicle, it is also important to optimize fleet emissions in the service industry of transportation and logistics service providers and energy-efficient supply chain management [18,19], where it is also important to consider special purpose vehicles, e.g., vehicles in food cold chain [20]. When green policies with the goal to lower fleet emissions are to be implemented, it is important for the logistics service providers that green policies must be also financially beneficial [21].…”

“…A key challenge for managers is to respond to the increase in transport volume [3], which stems from consumers' desire for more products as well as longer transport distances because of global supply chains and international production [4][5][6]. One way to foster sustainable development in freight transport is to focus on increasing the energy efficiency [7]. Here, energy-efficient freight transport needs to be approached in its wider system that is, the logistics system.…”

“…The urgent need for adopting sustainable energy sources was mentioned in the Paris agreement (2015) and the member states mentioned that the access to such sources should be universal [5]. The above mentioned agreements served as a starting point for different projects and research, but Centobelli et al [6] emphasized that there are still several gaps such as the classifications of energy efficiency, the impact of energy efficiency, the environmental sustainability on supply chain performance, and the customer perspective in a sustainable and energy-efficient supply chain that need deeper research in order to achieve the objective of these agreements.…”
