Environmental sustainability and biodiversity within the dental practice

Abstract: Biodiversity is decreasing sharply. Human well-being depends on the interacting web of living species: if health providers are truly concerned about human health they also need to concern themselves with the health of the planet.Awareness of the relationship between global health and human health is improving and the dental team can contribute to environmental health and, in doing so, to the overall health of the people they care for. Many dental practices have backyards that can perhaps be used more effectivel… Show more

“…There are many ways dental teams can contribute to a sustainable health system, and these were described in a British Dental Journal series last year (Duane, Croasdale, et al 2019; Duane, Harford, Ramasubbu, et al 2019; Duane, Harford, Steinbach, et al 2019; Duane, Ramasubbu, Harford, Steinbach, Stancliffe, Ballantyne 2019; Duane, Ramasubbu, Harford, Steinbach, Stancliffe, Croasdale, et al 2019; Duane, Steinbach, et al 2019). Some potential internal process changes are reviewed below, aligning these with core emissions, community emissions, and supply chain emissions, as well as providing recommendations for further research.…”

“…Recommendations (Duane, Ramasubbu, Harford, Steinbach, Stancliffe, Croasdale, et al 2019) included challenging the need to buy the product, buying more efficiently, and considering sustainable alternatives, provided these exist (see earlier recommendation about further research into sustainable products).…”

“…Dental care uses large amounts of paper, plastic and stainless steel products, both disposable and reusable. There is a growing realisation that sustainability is not just about carbon emissions but also about the type of materials we buy, the waste we produce and our impact on biodiversity [14][15][16]., Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a technique used to understand and assess the environmental impact of a product system or process. The life cycle of a product includes stages including; raw material acquisition, the production process, disposal and transportation [17].…”
