Environmental risks to humans, the first database of valence and arousal ratings for images of natural hazards

Abstract: Due to their relevance for the entire society, environmental hazards have largely been investigated in terms of their psychological effects. However, a complete image database comprising different categories of catastrophes has not been proposed yet. We selected 200 photographs of the most frequent natural disasters with the aim to collect the emotional reactions of observers. In particular, 20 stimuli were selected for each of the following 10 categories: earthquake, volcanic activity, lightning, hailstorm, d… Show more

“…This will lead to the development of a CNN architecture for recognizing emotions in context more robustly. Such emotion classification could lead to useful applications for humans, such as security 35 , education, human-robot interaction, psychological health assessment 36 , affective anomalies discovery and extreme behaviors prevention 37 . Furthermore, it is of our interest to test our newly annotated dataset on state-of-the-art emotion recognition models 14 , 23 , 24 .…”

“…The emotional assessment in this study uses PAD emotional state model [33], which includes three dimensions: valence, arousal, and dominance. We used 1-to-9 Self-Assessment Manikin (SAM) [42] to collect feedback from participants. We also used an extra question to quantify the performance of the horror stimuli (fear level): How fearful do you feel after experiencing the content (from 1 (low) to 9 (high))?…”
