Environmental Risk Factors for Inflammatory Bowel Diseases: An Umbrella Review of Meta-analyses

Abstract: Our study protocol was registered with PROSPERO (registration number: CRD42018112214). We followed a standardized methodology 7 and report findings according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (ie, PRISMA) 8 and Meta-analyses of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (ie, MOOSE) 9 recommendations. Search Strategy We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, and Scopus from inception through September 28, 2018, to identify metaanalyses of studies assessing the association bet… Show more

“…The SR/MA's quality seems to be low in many fields of medicine. Among studies published in medicine to September 2019, in which the AMSTAR 2 was used as an instrument to evaluate the quality of SR/MA, 23 of 31 papers produced results similar to our study . In the six studies, the methodological quality of most (around 60%) of SRs was critical low to low .…”

“…Contradictory to previous results from western studies, former smoking was associated with an increased risk of UC in Asian patients as well as in Australian patients in the ACCESS cohort . A recent umbrella review of meta‐analyses confirmed the divergent role of smoking in different ethnic groups …”

“…However, this was not able to be replicated in the Asian cohort which did, however, report that daily consumption of tea or coffee was associated with a decreased risk of developing IBD . An umbrella review of meta‐analyses recently confirmed that sucrose intake, soft drinks and red meat consumption increase the risk of developing IBD, while a high intake of fiber and tea prevented the development of CD and UC, respectively …”

“…In particular, low‐ and low‐middle income countries will need accurate estimates of the IBD burden in the next future to help healthcare planning and strategies to adapt their healthcare systems to increased disease occurrence. Finally, well‐recognised risk factors of IBD should be progressively validated and integrated into the ensemble model of the GBD Study. This would allow to calculate attributable risk fractions permitting the development of predictive models of the IBD burden.…”
